From May to October there are regular horseracing
meetings at four racecourses within easy access of Tigh Mhic. Ballinrobe, just
25 minutes away, is situated in a natural amphitheatre and it has
everything you need in a country racecourse: beautiful setting, lively
atmosphere and a typically Mayo laid-back attitude to the whole thing. For more,
see www.goracing.ie, or email roberaces@eircom.net.
Roscommon
Racecourse, 40 minutes from Tigh Mhic, is very spectator friendly with
comfortable stands and enclosures. The €40,000 Grade 3 Kilbegnet Novice Chase,
run at the end of September meeting, is the feature race of the year at the
course. For more, see the website above or email roscommonracecourse@eircom.net.
Sligo
racecourse, an hour away, is nestled among some of the most scenic countryside
imaginable with the mountains Benbulben and Knocknarea looking down from either
side of the town. For more, see the website above, or email info@countysligoraces.com.
Also an
hour away is Galway racecourse, with its famous summer festival running from 26
July to 1 August, its autumn festival from 28-30 August and the October bank
holiday festival from 24-25 October. There’s more at http://www.galwayraces.com/.
For
something completely different, the Lacken strand races in North Mayo are well
worth a look. Dates are yet to be confirmed, but keep an eye on http://www.ireland-guide.com/all_months_events/lacken_strand_races__co_mayo.7723.html
if you don’t want to miss nine horse and pony races – all on a beach!
