Built over 100 years ago this beautiful Congested District Board cottage has been brought back to life in a simple, contemporary style to make it a real gem of a find in East Mayo.
It could almost be a new home, but the old proportions have been retained and updated with new sash windows, underfloor heating and bright, light décor. The cottage is set in an acre of land including a secure garden, pasture land and restored barns. Tigh Mhic - “Mick’s Place” in English - is the place to unwind and enjoy the peace, relaxed pace of life and stunning views that we have in the West of Ireland.
The living space is open plan with a cosy lounge, dining area and well-equipped kitchen. The lounge has a peat/wood burning stove, Sky+ HD flat screen tv, HD dvd, Roberts radio and ipod/mp3 docking station. There is a small library of books, games (including All Ireland Monopoly), dvds and local maps, walking/cycling routes. Six people can be comfortably seated around the dining table which links the kitchen and lounge spaces. The well-planned kitchen includes nine-place dishwasher, microwave, electric hob and fan oven. The small utility area houses a 1400 spin washing machine. The bedrooms are designed for comfort with White Company bed linen, quilts and pillows. The master bedroom has an ensuite wet room, with the other two double bedrooms being small but perfectly formed. There is great space in the family bathroom. Towels and bathrobes are provided.
Outside you can explore the barns and field, or wander along our very quiet road. Or simply relax using the chairs, tables and benches provided. Secure storage is available for bikes, surfboards, fishing rods and the like.
Well behaved pets welcome.
Just eight miles away, the town of Claremorris has plenty of amenities including restaurants, cafes, pubs, banks, supermarkets and many other shops. The Old Arch bar/restaurant and Aghnas coffee shop are both well worth a visit, as is PJ Byrnes’ grocery and bar – the shop at the front and bar behind in traditional Irish style. And you’ll always get a good pint in Gilligans. In Tulrohaun, just over two miles from Tigh Mhic, you’ll find a tiny shop and post office which sells most of the necessities. Our county town of Castlebar is just 20 miles away, with renowned live music centre Westport just another 15 miles beyond.
