Born and buried in Straide near Foxford (25 mins drive from Tigh Mhic), Michael Davitt was a social reformer, international humanitarian, MP, and quite possibly the greatest patriot produced by Mayo. The museum dedicated to him (http://www.michaeldavittmuseum.com/) is well worth a look. Do have the guided tour, though, which is really, really interesting. It’s free, too, but feel free to make a donation. We did. Wish we’d discovered it sooner, too…
A tip from Seán: I just went to Céide Fields for the first time in about a decade. Amazing place altogether. On the way back I took a detour to Downpatrick Head, about 10 minutes away. Wow! If you want special scenery this is the place to see. The massive Dún Briste (broken fort) sea stack has to be seen to be believed. Click on gallery for a few of my photo attempts….
After 110 years, Tigh Mhic has just got its first-ever postcode: F12 P5C2. Simply go to the Eircode website (http://eircode.ie/) and enter the postcode. Up pops a map with Tigh Mhic highlighted, plus satellite images too. Or use the GPS coordinates at the bottom right of this page….
Just a few miles up the road at Turlough is the National Museum of Country Life (http://www.museum.ie/en/intro/country-life.aspx) and it’s getting a huge thumbs-up from all our visitors this year. Better put it on the ‘to do’ list when you visit!
