Tigh Mhic Holiday Cottage, East Mayo, Ireland
Built in 1903 and beautifully restored 105 years later, Tigh Mhic (‘Mick’s Place’ in English) is in the small village of Bracklagh in East Mayo – with Knock, Claremorris, Ballyhaunis and Knock airport nearby. While the cottage has kept its original proportions, the addition of new sash windows, underfloor heating, light, bright décor, high-quality fixtures and fittings and comfortable furniture make it a gem of a location. All this has helped Tigh Mhic achieve a 4* rating from Fáilte Ireland. This is the highest rating possible for any self-catering property in Ireland and Tigh Mhic is the only one in this part of Mayo to achieve this award.
Set in just over an acre, the property also includes three restored barns and two rescued miniature Shetland ponies – Timmy and Pancóg. They claim to do some of the gardening, but we have our doubts.
Tigh Mhic is an ideal place to unwind and enjoy the peace and relaxed pace of life here in East Mayo, or as a base to explore further into the County and beyond. What our guests think
Everything was as advertised. Sean is a gracious, informed and engaging host. The space is wonderful from the beds to the in-floor heating. The meal Suzy catered for us was outstanding. Our only regret was we didn't get to meet her and thank her personally. We were four brothers and two wives ages 69-62. We couldn't have been happier with our accommodations James, USA, March 2016 Thank you again for your wonderful hospitality. I truly enjoyed my three weeks at Mick's Place, your knowledge and pointing out the beautiful Mayo countryside provided a wonderful experience. I can't thank you enough. Also this is the first time I have stayed at a cottage where I was able to help take care of the animals and I LOVED it. The ponies were so adorable and the cats truly are cute Jenny, USA, April 2016 Dear Suzi, dear Sean, thank you so much for your warm and friendly welcome - the cookies were very delicious! We really enjoyed our stay in your beautiful and cosy cottage - Tigh Mhic was like paradise!
We had fun feeding the cats and the ponies, Pancog and Timmy, and loved the peaceful atmosphere. It was the perfect base for us to discover the surrounding attractions (e.g. Connemara, Westport, Cong including Ashford Castle). Kind regards and best wishes from Germany Joern and family, August 2015 Dear Seán and Suzi, just a few lines to thank you both sincerely for the lovely house. It really made a big difference to our stay in Mayo. It has to be one of the most comfortable houses in Mayo and the standard of everything in it is second to none. The best renovated 112-year old cottage in Mayo in our eyes. We will definitely be staying again on our next visit to Mayo. Suzi’s cookies were the best we ever tasted and a lovely gesture. I can highly recommend this beautiful cottage to anyone and it was lovely to have Pancóg and Timmy there too. It has been a very memorable stay for us. Tigh Mhic is a beautiful little cottage in the countryside, a great place to go if you want to escape for a few days and explore some of the west. The cottage was immaculate and had everything you needed, even a little ball pool for our daughter!! Sean and Suzi were extremely helpful and had great recommendations for places to visit and eat!! July 2015
Thank you so much Sean and Suzi for the nice welcome at the cottage. As we are not from the area, not even from Ireland, Sean was waiting for us at a junction close to the cottage to collect us. As we arrived we saw this beautiful cottage and just loved it straight away. There was milk in the fridge and bread and butter to get us started. It' s really comfortable and luxurious. The underfloor heating is so good and gives even a more cosier feel. The cottage is very clean and everything is provided for. They thought of everything, even toys for our 3 children. We all just loved to stay at Tigh Mhic and enjoyed each moment of it. That's why we will recommend this place highly to friends,,family and readers of this review. Thank you! KP, July 2015
The cottage was so comfortable and had everything we could possibly want (and more) and the location was perfect - peaceful yet easily able to drive to the beautiful west coast and all the other lovely places in the delightful county of Mayo. Sean was very welcoming on our arrival and we also enjoyed our lovely meals from the home catering service - much appreciated, along with the scrumptious Tea Brack and no wonder everyone raves about it so much. We will definitely be recommending this cottage to all our friends and relatives. The Johnson family, June 2015
This is our fourth visit to Tigh Mhic so I think that says it all. It was an extended family get-together and from the crisp fresh linen (my achilles heel), the attention to detail of the beautiful individual touches like blinds, pictures, craftwork, cleanliness, up to the minute technology (TV, music centre) right down to the heart of the house - the stove ready to be lit and all necessary kindling at the ready, Tigh Mhic has it all. It has a beautiful understated ambience which gives a tranquil feeling to life. On this visit, we particularly enjoyed the lovely wide wooden covered swing seat with tables built in to each side, which very nicely accommodated our wine and olives throughout the beautiful afternoon sunshine. All this before we mention the hospitality of Sean and Suzi, who, should you not wish to use the lovely well planned kitchen containing every item necessary for self catering, will provide (with notice of course)! the most wonderful mouth-watering home cooked main courses, desserts and - this has to be noted - mouth-watering tea brack. In fact, you need to make sure to order one to take home with you…the presence of Pancóg and Timmy- the resident stable guests complete the idyll. I can't recommend Tig Mhic highly enough. Thank you Sean and Suzi for your hospitality. Marguerite, June 2015
We had a warm welcome with the fire on, homemade cookies and loaf of bread, butter and milk. Very thoughtful. This cottage is the cleanest holiday home I have ever stayed (and not only in Ireland!) Spotless beds, lovely white linen, clean bathroom, clean windows (most cottages don't bother with this!). Well done. We will be back. Highly recommended 5 Katerina, June 2015
This cottage is perfect for our visits to Co Mayo and this last visit was my 17th to Tigh Mhic! The welcome pack on arrival is lovely and we take advantage of Suzi's home catering service which is really very good! The cottage is warm, inviting and very comfortable and "home from home". We are returning again in October - I think that says it all!!! A truly great place to stay and unwind in the Irish Countryside where the only noise is the birdsong or lowing of cows! Liz, June 2015 Our family, including two girls and our dog enjoyed a week at Tigh Mhic. The cottage is a modern/vintage twist on a traditional Irish cottage. We especially loved the under floor heating and the fire stove. Although unusually for Ireland we had beautiful sunshine most days. Waking up to see the mist rising of the nearby farmland, with only birdsong to disturb your thoughts made this a very special place. As ex-pats, we know the area well and availed of trips to nearby Ballyhaunis and Claremorris and day trips to Galway and Foxford. Highly recommended for families, a small group or those just seeking a peaceful hideaway. Loved the soda bread and butter in our welcome package. We will be back Imelda, April 2015 We have stayed in many self catering properties in our time, but never in one that lacked for nothing. The cottage was spotless, warm and every detail attended to. We arrived on Christmas Eve to find a decorated tree in the lounge, a bottle of wine and card under the tree, milk, bread and butter in the fridge and even homemade mince pies waiting to accompany our cup of tea - coffee, tea and sugar also provided! The wood burner was ready to be fired up and it put us in the Christmas spirit immediately. Not that the cottage was cold. The underfloor heating kept the cottage toasty-warm day and night. Sean and Suzi have thought of everything. The property is perfect for us 'oldies', but is well equipped for families with wee ones. The outside space with ponies in the field will keep children amused for hours. And if you don't feel like cooking in the superb kitchen, just pick up the phone or text Suzi and have home cooked food delivered to your door. Thank you guys for looking after us so well. We have already recommended the cottage to others and we will definitely be back! Marilyn, January 2015
